The Glenlivet Code is the third release in The Glenlivet's celebrated Mystery Series, a trio of conceptually adventurous single malts that began with Alpha in 2014 and continued with Cipher in 2016. From the historic Glenlivet Distillery in Speyside, established by George Smith in 1824 as the first licensed distillery in the parish of Glenlivet and now part of the Pernod Ricard portfolio, Code was released worldwide in March 2018 in 28 markets and packaged in a distinctive opaque black bottle that reveals nothing about the whisky inside. Where most premium scotch leans heavily on age statements, cask details, and detailed tasting notes to anchor consumer expectations, Master Distiller Alan Winchester created Code as a deliberate flavor puzzle, with no cask information, no tasting notes, and no age statement printed anywhere on the bottle at the time of release. Buyers were invited to scan a code on the back of the carton with the Shazam app to enter a virtual underground tasting room, where a hologram of Winchester would challenge them to identify four aromas and four flavors and submit their guesses to a global leaderboard. The cask details were eventually revealed in late 2018: a mixture of American oak barrels selectively finished in ex Canadian first fill Rye barrels, a genuinely unusual cask combination that puts a soft Canadian rye spice twist on Glenlivet's signature smooth and fruity Speyside style. Bottled at 48% ABV, Code is now fully discontinued and increasingly hard to source.

Tasting Notes

Color: Bright amber, visible only after pouring from the opaque black bottle.

Nose: True to Glenlivet's smooth and fruity house style, with orchard fruit, ripe pear, vanilla, and honey, layered with unexpected twists of soft baking spice, gentle rye character, and red apple from the Canadian rye cask finish.

Palate: Smooth and rounded, with stone fruit, vanilla custard, honey, and creamy malt up front, evolving into a gentle wash of cinnamon, clove, and soft pepper spice from the rye cask influence. The body is fuller and more layered than the standard Glenlivet 12.

Finish: Medium length, with lingering sweet oak, soft spice, and a clean Speyside fruit fade.

FAQ

What is The Glenlivet Mystery Series? A trio of limited edition releases by Master Distiller Alan Winchester designed to challenge whisky drinkers to taste without preconceptions. The series began with Alpha in 2014, continued with Cipher in 2016, and concluded with Code in 2018. All three were released in opaque black bottles with no cask information or tasting notes printed anywhere, accompanied by interactive digital tasting experiences. The Mystery Series is no longer in production.

What was the "Code" challenge? Buyers used the Shazam app to scan a code on the back of the carton, which unlocked a virtual underground tasting room hosted by a hologram of Master Distiller Alan Winchester. Participants were challenged to identify four aromas, four flavors, and the intensity of each, then submitted their answers for a score against a global leaderboard. The official tasting notes and cask details were not revealed until late 2018, months after release.

What casks were actually used? In late 2018 Glenlivet revealed that Code was matured in a mixture of American oak barrels and selectively finished in ex Canadian first fill rye barrels. This cask combination was genuinely unusual for premium Speyside single malt at the time and produced the soft spice and rye warmth that contrasted with Glenlivet's typical orchard fruit profile.

How rare is Code now? Code is fully discontinued and was never restocked after its 2018 limited run. Secondary market pricing has climbed substantially from the original ~$120 US retail, with current listings often ranging $300-$500 depending on condition and packaging. Sealed bottles with intact original opaque black box command the highest premium.

Where can I buy The Glenlivet Code online? Available here at Liquor On Broadway while stock lasts, with fast insured shipping nationwide. As a discontinued limited edition, once this bottle is gone it cannot be replenished from the distillery.
