Reserva de la Familia stayed inside the Cuervo family for ten generations, shared only with their closest circle, until 1995 when the house released it publicly to mark two centuries of production. Every year since, the bottle has arrived in a wooden collector's box designed by a commissioned artist, and the 2019 edition carries work by Jorge Pardo, the Cuban born, United States based artist and MacArthur Fellow whose practice sits deliberately between art, architecture and design. His box for 2019 is built from fine black linework laid across a gradient running from pink through coral to gold, dense at the base and opening out toward the top, so the surface reads as agave field, thicket and abstraction all at once depending on how long you look at it. It is among the more graphically striking boxes in the series. The tequila inside is the pinnacle of the Cuervo portfolio, from Latin America's oldest active distillery. Blue Weber agaves are hand selected at ten to twelve years, only the innermost heart of the piña is used, and the spirit is aged in new American and French oak drawn from the family's private cellar. It pours dark amber with rich oak, toasted almonds, apple, olive and cinnamon on the nose, then a rich but mellow palate of fresh fruit given structure by tobacco leaf and cocoa, closing long and exceptionally smooth. Every bottle is hand blown, the label applied individually, then dipped in wax, finished with the Cuervo family crest by hand, and hand signed, numbered and dated. The 2019 has been off shelves for years.
