Reserva de la Familia stayed inside the Cuervo family for ten generations, poured only for their closest circle, until 1995 when the house released it publicly to mark two hundred years. Every year since, the bottle has arrived in a wooden collector's box designed by a commissioned Mexican artist. The 2023 edition was created by Rolando Flores and Gabriel Cázares of the Tercerunquinto Collective, whose work examines the boundaries between private and public space, and their process here was unusually methodical. They travelled to Tequila, Mexico first, spending time in the agave fields to understand the terrain before abstracting it into hard edged geometric planes in teal, coral, black and white. The colours and composition are meant to carry the glassy lustre of volcanic obsidian, the abrasiveness of volcanic rock and the rosettes of the agave leaves themselves, so the box works as landscape and as pure geometry at once depending on how you look at it. The tequila inside is the pinnacle of the Cuervo portfolio, produced at Latin America's oldest active distillery. Hand selected Blue Weber agave is used, only the most flavorful inner portion of the heart, and the spirit is aged in new American and French oak in the family's private cellar before blending. It pours dark amber with rich oak, toasted almonds, apple, olive and cinnamon on the nose, then a rich but mellow palate of fresh fruit given structure by tobacco leaf and cocoa, closing long and exceptionally smooth. Every bottle is hand blown, the label applied individually, then dipped in wax, finished with the Cuervo family crest by hand, and hand signed, numbered and dated.

FAQ
Q: Who designed the 2023 box?
A: Rolando Flores and Gabriel Cázares of the Mexican artists' collective Tercerunquinto. Their piece is titled Structuring a Landscape.
Q: What does the artwork represent?
A: A geometric abstraction of the landscape around Tequila, Mexico, which the artists visited before designing. The colours and shapes reference volcanic obsidian, volcanic rock and the rosettes of agave leaves.
Q: Is every bottle individually numbered?
A: Yes. Each bottle is hand blown, wax dipped, then hand signed, numbered and dated, so no two are identical.
Q: Is the 2023 edition still produced?
A: No. Each collector's box is a single annual release. The 2023 has left shelves and is sought by collectors building the series.
Q: Does the liquid change year to year?
A: The Extra Añejo expression remains the constant. What changes annually is the commissioned artwork on the wooden box.
Q: Where can I buy Reserva de la Familia 2023 online?
A: Available here at Liquor On Broadway while stock lasts, with fast insured shipping nationwide.
