Reserva de la Familia was a family secret for ten generations, shared only with the Cuervo family's closest circle, until 1995 when they released it publicly to mark two hundred years of the house. Since then each annual release has arrived in a wooden collector's box designed by a commissioned Mexican artist, and the 2020 edition carries artwork by Gonzalo Lebrija, an internationally recognised conceptual artist working across photography, video, sound and sculpture whose practice is built around capturing the aesthetic of time. His box for 2020 is a restrained geometric composition in grey, taupe, cream and pale sage, hard edged and quiet in a way that sets it apart from the more saturated editions on either side of it. The tequila inside is the pinnacle of the Cuervo portfolio and the product of Latin America's oldest active distillery. Blue Weber agaves are hand selected at ten to twelve years, only the innermost heart of the piña is used, and the spirit is aged in new American and French oak drawn from the family's private cellar reserves. It pours dark amber and delivers rich oak, toasted almonds, apples, olives and cinnamon on the nose, then a rich but mellow palate of fresh fruit given structure by tobacco leaf and cocoa, closing long and exceptionally smooth. Every bottle is hand blown, the label applied individually, then dipped in wax and finished with the Cuervo family crest by hand, before being hand signed, numbered and dated. The 2020 box has been off shelves for years and now trades among collectors working backward through the series.

Q: Who designed the 2020 box?
A: Gonzalo Lebrija, an internationally recognised Mexican conceptual artist working across photography, video, sound and sculpture.
Q: Is every bottle individually numbered?
A: Yes. Each bottle is hand blown, wax dipped, and then hand signed, numbered and dated, so no two are identical.
Q: Is the 2020 edition still produced?
A: No. Each collector's box is a single annual release. The 2020 edition has been off shelves for years and is sought by collectors building the series.
Q: How is the tequila made?
A: From Blue Weber agaves grown ten to twelve years, using only the innermost heart of the plant, aged in new American and French oak from the family's private cellar.
Q: Does the liquid change year to year?
A: The Extra Añejo expression remains the constant. What changes annually is the commissioned artwork on the wooden box.
Q: Where can I buy Reserva de la Familia 2020 online?
A: Available here at Liquor On Broadway while stock lasts, with fast insured shipping nationwide.
