Gold Bar Rickhouse Cask Strength is a bold, characterful straight bourbon from the Gold Bar Spirits Company, the San Francisco based outfit best known for its striking gold bar shaped decanters. Rickhouse, named for the warehouses where whiskey rests and matures, trades the novelty packaging for a more traditional bottle and lets the liquid do the talking. Triple copper pot distilled from a mashbill of 80 percent corn and 20 percent rye, and made with California's legendary Hetch Hetchy water in a nod to the brand's Bay Area roots, it is first matured in extra charred new American oak and then raked over French oak staves for finishing. That combination of heavy char and French oak gives the whiskey its distinctive complexity, layering smoke and spice over a rich, sweet core. Bottled at a robust 103 proof and left non chill filtered, it retains the full body, natural oils, and intensity of a cask strength pour. The color is a deep ruby copper to rich mahogany, and the nose is immediately inviting, with smoky aromas of grilled meats and campfire alongside caramel, brown sugar, and freshly brewed coffee. The palate is medium to full bodied and complex, opening with oak and coffee, then layering in chocolate, burnt sugar, and warm spice, before a smooth, nutty, sweet vanilla bean finish that balances dry oak against lingering sweetness. A San Francisco World Spirits Competition Double Gold winner, it is an excellent value cask strength bourbon, delicious neat, over a large cube, or as a bold base for a Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
