Dos Artes built its reputation on a simple proposition: the bottle should be worth keeping long after the tequila is gone. Every release comes in a ceramic decanter thrown and painted by hand in Mexico, which means no two are identical, and the annual Calavera limited editions are where the house pushes that furthest. The 2022 edition works in a cream, deep green and marigold gold palette drawn from traditional Talavera pottery, with a Catrina face rendered across the front panel in floral linework and the surrounding surface filled with leaves, petals and fine dotwork. The skull imagery references Día de Muertos, and the calm, open eyed treatment here is closer to celebration than menace, which is the point of the tradition. Inside is Dos Artes Extra Añejo, made from 100 percent estate grown Blue Weber agave and matured for more than three years in a combination of French and American oak. Extra añejo requires a minimum of three years by law, and the split cask approach does real work: American oak supplies the vanilla, caramel and butterscotch, while French oak brings a drier, spicier structure that keeps the sweetness from running away. The result pours deep amber with copper lights and drinks full bodied and silky, opening on caramelised agave and vanilla, moving through dark chocolate, honey, cinnamon and roasted nuts, and finishing long on oak, cocoa and sweet spice. It is bottled at 40 percent alcohol by volume in a full one litre format rather than the usual 750ml. Distribution is deliberately limited, so these move quickly and rarely come back once a year's edition is gone. Best sipped neat, and displayed afterward.

Color: Deep amber with copper highlights.
Nose: Caramelised agave and vanilla lead, with dark chocolate and toasted oak behind.
Palate: Full bodied and silky, layering butterscotch, honey, cinnamon and roasted nuts over cooked agave.
Finish: Long and luxurious, with lingering oak, cocoa and sweet spice.
Q: Why is it a full litre?
A: Dos Artes bottles its entire range in one litre hand painted ceramic decanters rather than the standard 750ml, so there is noticeably more tequila in the bottle.
Q: Will my bottle look exactly like the photo?
A: Not exactly. Each decanter is painted by hand, so small variations in linework and colour are expected and are part of what makes each one individual.
Q: What does extra añejo mean?
A: A tequila aged a minimum of three years in oak. This one spends more than thirty six months in French and American oak.
Q: What is the Calavera series?
A: An annual limited edition from Dos Artes built around Día de Muertos skull imagery, with new artwork each year. This is the 2022 edition.
Q: Is the bottle refillable or displayable?
A: It is a ceramic decanter designed to be kept. Many buyers hold onto them as display pieces.
Q: Where can I buy Dos Artes 2022 Calavera Extra Añejo online?
A: Available here at Liquor On Broadway while stock lasts, with fast insured shipping nationwide.
