Don Julio Añejo is where the Highlands terroir of Jalisco meets the patience of the barrel. Don Julio González planted his Blue Weber agave in the rich red clay soil of Atotonilco el Alto in 1942 and built his distillery — La Primavera — with a single conviction: that tequila could be as refined and complex as any aged spirit in the world, if the agave was exceptional and the aging was given the time it deserved. The Añejo is the fullest expression of that conviction in the core Don Julio lineup.

Aged for 18 months in small batches in American white oak barrels, the Don Julio Añejo develops a depth that a reposado simply cannot reach. The natural sweetness of the Highlands Blue Weber agave — that distinctive floral, slightly fruity character that defines Don Julio's house style — is still present, but now it's integrated with vanilla, caramel, and the warm toasted oak character that only a year and a half in barrel can produce. Rich, distinctive, and unmistakably smooth. Presented in the signature dark amber bottle with Don Julio's characteristic short, wide silhouette and includes the burgundy gift box.

Color: Deep amber — the 18 months of American oak is visible in the glass

Nose: Caramel sweet initially, with clean vegetal agave aromas rising from the glass — vanilla, dried fruit, and a hint of toasted oak underneath

Palate: Rich and balanced — the Highlands agave sweetness is fully integrated with vanilla, caramel, warm ginger, black pepper, and the complex wood character of the barrel

Finish: Soft, warm and of medium-long length — smooth and satisfying with a gentle warmth that lingers cleanly

FAQ

How does Don Julio Añejo differ from Don Julio Reposado?
Don Julio Reposado rests for eight months in American white oak barrels — long enough to add vanilla and light oak character while keeping the agave freshness dominant. The Añejo rests for 18 months — more than twice as long — allowing the barrel to develop a noticeably deeper caramel and vanilla profile and a richer, fuller body. The Reposado is the versatile sipper; the Añejo is the slow-down-and-savour expression.

How does Don Julio Añejo compare to Don Julio 1942?
Both are añejo tequilas from the same Jalisco Highlands agave. Don Julio 1942 is aged for a minimum of two and a half years — significantly longer than the standard Añejo's 18 months — and is positioned as a luxury sipping expression with a fuller, more complex profile. The standard Añejo is the accessible premium step up from the Reposado; 1942 is the luxury tier above it.
