Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Barrel Proof Batch 10 is the 2021 edition of Buffalo Trace's most uncompromising E.H. Taylor release, bottled uncut and unfiltered at 127.3 proof. The line honors Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr., born in Kentucky in 1830, who moved to Louisiana with his great uncle Zachary Taylor before returning to Kentucky and making his most indelible mark on history as a founding father of the modern bourbon industry. This whiskey is drawn directly from hand selected barrels of Buffalo Trace's Mash Bill #1, the distillery's low rye bourbon recipe, and aged in the century old warehouses that Taylor himself built and oversaw. Nothing is added and nothing is taken away, reflecting the way whiskey was produced before chill filtration and proofing down became standard practice. Barrel Proof is released roughly once a year, typically in the fall, and each batch carries its own natural strength, which is why the label reads proof varies by batch, quality unyielding. Batch 10 pours a rich mahogany amber. The nose is deep and inviting, with dark caramel, seasoned oak, toasted nuts, dried cherry and pipe tobacco over warm baking spice. The palate is full bodied and generous, layering brown sugar, toffee, dark chocolate and vanilla with cinnamon, leather and a firm peppery bite. The finish is long and warming, closing on oak tannin, molasses and lingering spice. At this strength a few drops of water or a large ice cube open it beautifully, though seasoned palates will find plenty to explore neat. One note for collectors: Batch 10 and the later Batch 13 were both bottled at 127.3 proof, and the laser code on the glass is the way to tell them apart. This is the 2021 bottling, coded L21, now several batches removed from shelves and genuinely scarce.

FAQ

What proof is E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof Batch 10?

Batch 10 is bottled at 127.3 proof (63.65% ABV), uncut and unfiltered.

How can I tell Batch 10 from Batch 13?

Both were bottled at 127.3 proof. The laser code on the glass tells them apart: L21 indicates the 2021 bottling, which is Batch 10, while L24 indicates Batch 13 from 2024.

What mashbill is used?

It comes from Buffalo Trace Mash Bill #1, the distillery's low rye bourbon recipe.

What does uncut and unfiltered mean?

No water is added to lower the proof and the whiskey is not chill filtered, so it reaches the bottle as it left the barrel.

Is Batch 10 still in production?

No. It was the 2021 release, and several newer batches have followed, making it increasingly hard to find.
