Bowman Brothers Pioneer Spirit is the flagship small batch bourbon from A. Smith Bowman Distillery, a historic craft distillery in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and a sister operation to Buffalo Trace under the Sazerac umbrella. The bourbon is a tribute to John, Abraham, Joseph, and Isaac Bowman, four brothers who served as Virginia militia officers in the American Revolutionary War and in 1779 led thirty pioneer families to Kentucky to establish Bowman's Station. Their great great grandson, Abram Smith Bowman, founded the family distillery after Prohibition, and that pioneering spirit lives on in this bottle. What sets Bowman Brothers apart is its production: the bourbon is distilled three times through the distillery's unique copper still, an unusual approach in the bourbon world that yields an exceptionally smooth spirit, then aged for several years, around six to seven, in new charred American white oak barrels in Virginia rickhouses. Built from a mash of corn, rye, and malted barley and bottled at an approachable 90 proof, it is smooth, easygoing, and full of classic character. Expect a warm, inviting nose of sweet fruit, brown sugar, corn, and vanilla with background oak and spice, a palate of vanilla, caramel, almond, cocoa, and gentle oak, and a smooth, mellow finish with building clove and nutmeg. An award winning, distinctive, and genuinely good value Virginia bourbon, it rewards a little time in the glass and a splash of water. Enjoy it neat, over ice, or in a classic bourbon cocktail.
