Ardbeg Day is the distillery's annual moment during Fèis Ìle, the Islay festival, and each year brings a limited Committee release built around a specific experiment. Smokiverse is the 2025 edition, and it also marks twenty five years of the Ardbeg Committee, which is why that roundel appears on the label. The experiment here is high gravity mashing, and it is a genuine first for the distillery. In simple terms, less water and more grain go into the mash tun, producing a far more concentrated wort. That density drives the creation of flavor active esters during fermentation, and esters are what carry fruit character in whisky. The counterintuitive result is that a technique aimed at intensity produces a fruitier, sweeter Ardbeg rather than a smokier one. Maturation is in ex bourbon barrels, and the whisky is bottled at 48.3 percent alcohol by volume, non chill filtered and at natural color, so nothing has been stripped out or added back. In the glass it is bright gold. The nose is genuinely unusual, opening on smoked bubblegum and ripening barley with toasted sourdough behind, then moving into tropical fruit under a veil of smoke. Water opens it further into dense aromatic peat. The palate is rich and creamy, with muscovado sweetness carrying intense peat, tar, aniseed and clove, and sweet oak and leather underneath. It finishes long, sooty and spiced. Drink it neat first, then add a few drops of water and taste it again, because it changes considerably. As an annual Committee bottling it will not be repeated.

Tasting Notes
Color: Bright gold, natural and uncolored.
