Aviation is America's original craft gin, created in Portland, Oregon by bartender Ryan Magarian and distiller Christian Krogstad, who set out to build something more versatile and mixable than the juniper forward London Dry style. The recipe is unusual and worth knowing: cardamom, coriander, French lavender, anise seed, sarsaparilla, juniper and two kinds of orange peel, macerated for eighteen hours before a seven hour distillation. The spirit comes off at 142 proof and is brought down to 84, and the result leans floral, citrus and spice rather than pine, which is why bartenders reach for it. The Deadpool edition arrived in summer 2024 alongside Marvel Studios' Deadpool and Wolverine, and it is a genuine full circle for the brand. Ryan Reynolds, Aviation's co owner, has said publicly that he discovered the gin while shooting the first Deadpool film, back when Aviation was too small to tie into a summer blockbuster and the film itself was struggling to attract sponsors. Nearly a decade later the two arrived at a proper collaboration. Designed by Maximum Effort and Sandstrom Partners, the bottles are smoked black glass with red strip stamps, metallic detailing and the Deadpool mask icon on the label. Worth knowing before you order: six different bottle designs were produced for this release, each with a different icon treatment, and which one you receive is not something any retailer can guarantee. The gin inside is identical across all six. Same crisp, clean, balanced spirit, same award record, in a bottle that people tend to keep.
