Tres Generaciones sits at the top of the Sauza house, and the name is doing real work rather than decorating a bottle. Casa Sauza has been making tequila in Jalisco since 1873, and this line was created by Don Francisco Javier Sauza, the third generation of that family, as a tribute to the two that came before him. The three stripes on the packaging carry the same idea, and so does the production: the tequila is triple distilled, one pass for each generation. That third distillation is genuinely unusual in tequila, where twice is the norm, and it is the reason this drinks as softly as it does. A third pass strips out more of the heavier congeners, which costs some raw agave punch but buys a noticeably cleaner and rounder spirit. The añejo then spends a minimum of twelve months in toasted American oak, which is where the color and most of the character come from. It pours a pale to deep amber depending on the batch. The nose leads with toasted oak over lightly cooked agave, with caramel and vanilla sweetness behind and a floral lift that catches people by surprise. The palate is round, smooth and balanced, opening on brown sugar before softening into oak and clean agave, with dried fruit and a touch of spice underneath. The finish is warm and oaky with a faint smokiness. This is an approachable añejo rather than a challenging one, which makes it a sensible pour for someone crossing over from whiskey. Drink it neat, over ice, or build it into a tequila Old Fashioned.
