The Black Ghost is the darker half of Gran Agave's Halloween pair, and the one that tends to sell first. The decanter is a glossy black ceramic ghost with the eyes and open mouth left in white, which inverts the usual cartoon ghost and reads considerably more sinister than its pale counterpart. It is a genuine display piece, and it keeps working long after the tequila is gone. What is inside is Gran Agave Reposado, made from 100 percent Blue Weber agave grown in Jalisco and distilled slowly so the cooked agave character survives the process rather than getting stripped out. It then rests six months in American oak. Reposado allows anywhere from two months to a full year, and six months is a deliberate middle: long enough that the barrel contributes real vanilla, cinnamon and honeyed sweetness with a soft spice through the middle, short enough that the agave still leads. The result has decent body and grip, with intense agave lingering on the palate and a clean, mellow finish rather than anything heavy or over oaked. Bottled at 40 percent alcohol by volume. These decanters are produced in limited quantities for the Halloween season and do not return once a year's run has cleared, which is why they tend to go quickly through September and October.
