The Pour | Week 2 : Weller Special Reserve - The Original Wheated Bourbon - Liquor On Broadway

The Pour | Week 2 : Weller Special Reserve - The Original Wheated Bourbon

Welcome back to The Pour, our weekly ritual where every Thursday we open something worth sipping and share the story behind it. One bottle. One piece of whiskey history. And a few ideas on how to drink it right.

This week, we’re pouring a bourbon that quite literally changed the American whiskey landscape:

Weller Special Reserve.

Soft, warm, and unmistakably smooth, Weller is the foundation of the wheated bourbon category and the bottle that influenced generations of distillers.

The Story Behind the Bottle

Before bourbon collectors were chasing single barrels and rare allocations, one man shifted the entire direction of American whiskey: William Larue Weller.

He made a bold decision that was almost unheard of at the time, he replaced spicy rye with soft winter wheat in his mashbill.
The result?
A rounder, sweeter, smoother bourbon that became the blueprint for the modern “wheater.”

Weller Special Reserve represents the most classic expression of that idea. No age statement. No flash. Just the original wheated bourbon crafted at the historic Buffalo Trace Distillery.

Its lineage is legendary, the same wheated mashbill would go on to inspire Pappy Van Winkle, one of the most sought-after bourbons in the world. That shared DNA is a big part of why Weller bottles have become so beloved (and so hunted).

Today, Weller Special Reserve remains one of the most drinkable bourbons out there — approachable for newcomers, rewarding for collectors, and always a crowd-pleaser.

Gentle, smooth, and easy — the signature of a true wheated bourbon.

How to Drink It

Neat
Shows off the softness that wheat brings to the mashbill.

On a Large Ice Cube
Opens up extra layers of vanilla and caramel.

Gold Rush
Two ounces Weller, lemon juice, and honey syrup.
Bright, citrusy, and dangerously smooth.

Pro Tip:
Try a piece of milk chocolate between sips — wheat bourbons pair beautifully with sweetness.

Pair It With: Cohiba Blue Toro
Cohiba Blue - Liquor On Broadway

Weller’s gentle profile shines when paired with cigars that bring creaminess rather than intensity.

The Cohiba Blue Toro is the perfect match:

Creamy cocoa

Light cedar

Medium-bodied draw

Smooth enough not to overpower the bourbon

It highlights Weller’s warm honey and vanilla notes while adding just the right amount of depth.
