Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond 10 Year Old, Spring 2023 edition, is part of Heaven Hill's celebrated decanter series, released twice yearly since its modern revival in 2018. Each release showcases a single distillation season, and this one comes from barrels produced in the spring of 2013 and bottled ten years later in the spring of 2023. It meets the strict federal Bottled in Bond standard: the product of a single distillery from a single distilling season, aged a minimum of four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottled at exactly 100 proof. This release goes well beyond that minimum with a full 10 year age statement. Old Fitzgerald is a wheated bourbon, using wheat rather than rye as the secondary grain, and that softer, rounder character is what a decade in Kentucky rickhouses deepens so well. The line carries genuine history. The brand was first registered in 1884 and named for John E. Fitzgerald, later owned by Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle before Heaven Hill acquired it in 1999. The bourbon pours a deep amber. The nose is layered, with cinnamon, vanilla and caramel over subtle oak spice and gentle fruit sweetness. The palate is rich and velvety, coating the mouth with honey, butterscotch and brown sugar alongside plums, peaches and figs, with toasted oak underneath. The finish is warm and sweet, closing with dark fruit and milk chocolate. The presentation is a large part of the appeal: an ornate diamond decanter inspired by an original 1950s Old Fitzgerald design, wearing the green label that marks every spring release, with the distilling and bottling season disclosed on the tax strip. Released on a strictly allocated basis, it is as much a display piece as a pour.
