Corralejo Anejo is the brand's twelve month aged expression, instantly recognizable in its tall, striking red glass bottle, a color that signifies prosperity in Mexican tradition. It is a 100 percent blue Weber agave tequila made at the historic Hacienda Corralejo in Penjamo, in the state of Guanajuato, one of the few regions outside Jalisco permitted to produce tequila and the birthplace of Miguel Hidalgo, a central figure in Mexican independence. The estate dates to the 18th century and remains notable for blowing its own glass and applying labels by hand. What distinguishes Corralejo is its use of the Charentais double distillation method in copper pot stills, the same technique perfected in French Cognac production, which yields a clean, aromatic base spirit. The agave is hand harvested and the tequila is matured for twelve months, the minimum that defines the anejo category, in charred American oak that lends a gentle layer of smoke and warm barrel character. It pours a pale to deep gold and shows a profile of oak and smoke laced with cocoa, vanilla and peppercorn on the nose, opening to caramel, cooked pear, white pepper and cardamom spice on the palate, with a luxurious, full bodied finish. The brand has earned competition recognition including a gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Built as a sipping tequila, it is best enjoyed neat or over a single large cube to let the oak and agave unfold, though it also adds depth to an elevated cocktail. For a characterful anejo with genuine heritage and an unmistakable bottle, this is a rewarding pour.
