Founded in 2014 by Joe Beatrice, Barrell has won Best American Whiskey of 2018 from whiskey authority Fred Minnick, and its Gray Label series represents the apex of the program: the oldest, rarest stock in the Barrell library, handled with maximum care.

Gray Label Seagrass begins with two distinct groups of 16-year-old 100% Canadian Rye barrels — one group defined by bright citrus and crisp green apple character, the other by earthy spearmint. Rather than simply blending them together, Barrell constructed three entirely separate finishing programs: a portion of the first group went into apricot brandy casks; a portion of the second group went into Martinique Rhum Agricole barrels; and a blend of both groups went into Malmsey Madeira barrels. Each set was monitored continuously and pulled at the exact moment the secondary maturation reached its peak. Only then were the three finished components slowly married together into the final blend. The result is one of the most architecturally complex rye whiskies ever assembled — bottled at 130.82 proof from the barrel without water or filtration, individually numbered, in a limited run.
