This is Widow Jane in its earlier, single barrel form: a straight bourbon whiskey aged ten years in American oak and bottled from one individual barrel rather than blended. The label records Barrel 1758 and the year 2018, with the age hand written alongside the barrel number, the way Widow Jane documented each cask in this era. The brand takes its name from the Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale, New York, and the label names that mine directly. Pure limestone mineral water drawn from it is used to proof the whiskey, and the cement quarried from those legendary mines helped build the Brooklyn Bridge and the base of the Statue of Liberty. That mineral rich water is central to the brand's identity and to the soft, rounded mouthfeel that defines Widow Jane bourbon. Bottled at 45.5% ABV (91 proof), it pours a deep russet amber. The nose is layered and inviting, with vanilla, caramel and honeyed oak joined by dried cherry, orange peel and warm baking spice. The palate is soft and generous, exactly as a decade in oak should deliver, offering brown sugar, dark chocolate, toasted nuts and stewed fruit over a gentle backbone of cinnamon and clove. The finish is long and mellow, with lingering oak, leather and a sweet caramel close, never harsh or drying despite its age. Because it comes from a single barrel, the character here belongs to this cask alone and will not be repeated. Best enjoyed neat or with one large cube. The tall clear bottle with its stark black on white label and wax dipped top makes an impressive gift, and as an older dated bottle in a label format Widow Jane no longer uses, it is an increasingly hard one to find.
