Dewar's 12 Year Double Aged is the remastered flagship aged expression from the world's most awarded blended Scotch whisky brand, reimagined in 2022 by four time IWC Master Blender of the Year Stephanie Macleod. The blend marries up to 40 of the finest single malt and grain whiskies, all aged a minimum of 12 years, anchored by the honeyed Highland malt of the Aberfeldy Distillery in Perthshire. What sets Dewar's apart is the signature double aging process, a maturation technique unique to the house and perfected by founding Master Blender A.J. Cameron, in which the whisky rests a second time in oak casks after the initial blending to allow the components to integrate for unmatched smoothness. For this expression, Macleod added a finishing step in first fill American oak bourbon casks for the first time, layering in extra vanilla, citrus, and orchard fruit sweetness. The result earned 94 points from Whisky Advocate, the highest score ever awarded to a 12 year old blended Scotch, and Best Blended Scotch 12 Years Old at the 2024 International Whisky Competition. Bottled at 40% ABV. Rich, fruity, floral, gently smoky, and exceptionally smooth, it is one of the best value premium blended Scotches on the shelf.

FAQ

What is Dewar's "Double Aged" process? Double aging is a maturation technique unique to Dewar's, perfected by founding Master Blender A.J. Cameron. After the individual whiskies are blended together, the married blend is returned to oak casks for a second period of aging. This extra step allows the components to integrate fully and produces the exceptional smoothness Dewar's is known for. Every Dewar's whisky is double aged.

What changed in the 2022 reformulation? Master Blender Stephanie Macleod reimagined the 12 Year in 2022, adding a finishing step in first fill American oak bourbon casks for the first time. This layered in additional vanilla, citrus, and orchard fruit sweetness, giving the whisky greater breadth and depth of flavor. The remastered version also got a new premium clear glass bottle design.

How is Dewar's 12 different from Johnnie Walker Black? Both are 12 year blended Scotches at 40% ABV, but they have different house styles. Dewar's 12 favors a sweeter, more fruit forward and honeyed character thanks to its bourbon cask finishing and double aging. Johnnie Walker Black shows more pronounced smokiness from its Islay malt components, making it a drier, peatier option. Dewar's is the smoother, sweeter pour.

How should I drink it? The double aging process creates a well integrated, smooth whisky designed for neat enjoyment, and the 94 point Whisky Advocate score reflects its strength as a sipping Scotch. Also excellent on the rocks, in a highball, or as the base for elevated Scotch cocktails. Pairs well with smoked salmon and aged cheese.

How does this compare to other Dewar's expressions? Dewar's offers a full range: the entry White Label (no age statement), then the aged Double Aged line at 12, 15, 18, and 25 years, plus the Caribbean Smooth and other cask finished variants. The 12 Year is the entry point to the age stated Double Aged lineup and offers exceptional value for a 94 point whisky.
