Bulleit Bourbon Bottled in Bond is a milestone for the brand: the first Bulleit bourbon distilled, aged and bottled entirely at its own Bulleit Distilling Company in Shelbyville, Kentucky, which opened in 2017. Bottled in Bond is one of American whiskey's strictest standards. Under the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, the whiskey must be the product of one distillery and one distillation season, aged at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottled at exactly 100 proof. Bulleit's debut release went well beyond that minimum, spending seven years in bond before bottling. It is made with Bulleit's heritage high rye mashbill and Kentucky limestone filtered water, the same foundation that made the flagship Frontier Whiskey a bartender favorite, but the extra age and higher proof deliver noticeably more richness, structure and depth. On the nose, spice and toasted oak lead, with vanilla and brown sugar close behind. The palate is smooth and creamy, with maple sweetness, nutmeg and baking spice layered over caramel and a lively rye kick. The finish is long and warming, lingering on butterscotch and seasoned oak. At 100 proof it has the backbone to shine neat or on a large cube, and it stands up beautifully in an Old Fashioned, Manhattan or whiskey sour. Bulleit has released Bottled in Bond as a limited time offering, with each edition's timing decided by the blending team, so availability varies from year to year. For bourbon fans curious about what Bulleit's own Shelbyville whiskey tastes like, this is the clearest window yet.
