Bruichladdich Octomore 13.2 is the sherry cask chapter of the thirteenth Octomore series, pairing the same super heavily peated spirit as 13.1 with a completely different cask story. Concerto barley grown on the Scottish mainland and harvested in 2015 was malted to 137.3 PPM and distilled at Bruichladdich in 2016. Rather than American oak, the spirit spent its full five year maturation in first fill Oloroso sherry butts from Fernando de Castilla, a respected bodega in Jerez de la Frontera, resting in dunnage warehouses in the village of Port Charlotte on Islay. The slow, cold Islay maturation and rich Oloroso casks bring out a salty tang in the spirit and wrap the smoke in dried fruit, citrus and spice. Bottled at 58.3% ABV (116.6 proof), non chill filtered and with no added color, it opens with nutty, salty smoke, milk chocolate and leathery tobacco, then syrupy orange and grapefruit with clove, cinnamon, walnut and praline. The palate is dense and powerful, with smoked nuts, dates, figs, marmalade and dark chocolate, before earthy peat smoke returns on a long, sea breeze finish. A drop of water softens the strength and draws out more of the fruit. This is the 750ml bottling in the signature slate grey tube, carrying the signature of Adam Hannett, head distiller at the time of release. Like every Octomore edition, 13.2 was produced once in limited quantities, and with newer series now on shelves it has become a sought after bottle for fans of peat and sherry alike.
