Bruichladdich Octomore 13.1 is the cornerstone of the thirteenth Octomore series, the distillery's ongoing experiment in just how far peat smoke can be pushed while keeping a whisky balanced and complex. The barley, 100% Scottish Concerto from the 2015 harvest, was malted to a staggering 137.3 PPM, more than double the level of most heavily peated Islay malts, then distilled at Bruichladdich in 2016. It spent five years maturing on Islay in first fill American oak casks, which lay down rich vanilla, coconut and honeyed sweetness to meet the smoke head on. Bottled at 118.4 proof, non chill filtered and with no added color, it is bold, viscous and surprisingly nuanced. The first wave is sweet, nutty smoke and barley sugar, followed by ripe apricot, pear and crème brûlée, before the peat settles into earthy, leathery depth. A few drops of water unlock fruit and floral notes hiding beneath the smoke. Each Octomore edition is released once, in limited quantities, and the 13 series has since been followed by newer editions, so bottles like this are increasingly sought after by peat lovers and collectors alike. The bottle and tube carry the signature of head distiller Adam Hannett.
