Blanton's Gold Edition is the higher proof sibling of Blanton's Original Single Barrel, the bourbon credited with launching the modern single barrel category in 1984. Created by Buffalo Trace master distiller Elmer T. Lee and named for Colonel Albert B. Blanton, Blanton's draws every bottle from one individual barrel, never blended with any other. Gold Edition first appeared in Japan in 1993 and for decades was sold only in select international markets, until Buffalo Trace began releasing it in the United States in limited annual allocations in 2020. Each barrel is distilled from Buffalo Trace's high rye mash bill and aged in Warehouse H, the distillery's only metal clad warehouse, where pronounced seasonal temperature swings drive the bourbon deep into the charred oak. Gold is bottled at 103 proof, ten points above the Original, bringing richer rye spice and more pronounced oak while keeping the house's signature balance. The label is filled in by hand with the dump date, barrel number, warehouse and rick, and the bottle wears Blanton's collectible horse and jockey stopper. Expect a honey coloured bourbon with caramel, honey and toasted oak on the nose, a creamy palate of vanilla, dark chocolate, spicy rye and a touch of tobacco, and a long, warming finish with peppery spice.
