Scorpion Mezcal Reposado is an award-winning, artisan-made mezcal from Oaxaca, Mexico, and one of the most recognizable expressions in the category for a reason that sits at the bottom of every bottle: a real scorpion, hand-collected from the hills surrounding the distillery. Not the traditional agave worm that most Mexican spirits place in the bottle — Scorpion made a deliberate choice, and made it a slogan: "Worms are for wimps." Behind that bold character is an equally serious approach to craft. Maestro Mezcalero Douglas French has been producing at Scorpion since 1996, learning the trade from third-generation mezcalero Don Lupe and building what is now a 50,000-square-foot production facility in Oaxaca that supports local agave farmers paid fairly for sustainably harvested maguey. The Reposado is made exclusively from 100% Agave Espadín (Angustifolia), double-distilled in copper, and aged in French oak barrels of less than 200 liters for 6 to 12 months — enough time for the oak to soften the smoke, add caramel depth, and layer in warm spice without masking the raw Oaxacan character that makes Espadín mezcal worth drinking. Every aged bottling is a single-barrel release, ensuring each bottle comes from one specific barrel rather than a blended lot. Bottled at 80 proof and 40% ABV, the Reposado was rated "Highly Recommended" and "Superb" by Wine Enthusiast.

Tasting Notes
Color: Oak amber with warm golden tones — beautiful medium amber, like a small puddle of agave nectar resting in the glass.
Nose: Smoky and understated — more restrained than the silver. Dry, with lime, citrus, and cucumber, followed by salt, savory herbs, and on more warming: char, creosote, and subtle spiciness. The French oak aging shines through clearly even at six months.
Palate: Dry and sweet simultaneously — citrus, leather, dry smoke, lime, and hints of cardamom and nutmeg. Resinous on the tongue with a creamy mouthfeel that whispers down the throat before leaving a delicately warm finish. Remarkably complex and smooth for the proof.
Finish: Smoky and spicy with a mesquite campfire quality — warm, lingering, and inviting. The honeyed oak barrel character from the French oak carries the close.
FAQ
Why is there a real scorpion in the bottle?
Each bottle of Scorpion Mezcal contains a real scorpion hand-collected from the hills surrounding the distillery in Oaxaca. Maestro Mezcalero Douglas French made a deliberate choice to depart from the agave worm tradition that most mezcal and tequila brands follow — the scorpion is a bolder, more distinctive symbol that reflects the character of the spirit. It is safe to handle and consume, preserved in the alcohol. The brand's slogan says it all: "Worms are for wimps."
What makes Scorpion Reposado different from the Joven or Añejo?
All three are made from 100% Agave Espadín and double-distilled in copper at the same Oaxacan facility. The Joven is unaged, delivering raw, pure smoke and agave character. The Reposado spends 6 to 12 months in French oak barrels, adding caramel depth, soft leather, and citrus spice while preserving the smoky backbone. The Añejo ages for a minimum of one year, producing the richest and most oak-influenced expression — it has won "Best Mezcal Spirit of the Year" from Food & Wine.
