Glenmorangie A Tale of Ice Cream is the playful and acclaimed fifth release in Glenmorangie's award winning "A Tale Of…" Limited Edition series, released in 2024 by the celebrated Highland distillery. The series is built on the boundless creativity of Glenmorangie's Director of Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden, who explores unexpected flavor inspirations and turns them into single malt, alongside Master Blender Gillian Macdonald. For A Tale of Ice Cream, Dr Bill set out to capture the flavors of a classic ice cream parlour in whisky form: sweet, creamy, vanilla rich, with the fruit and indulgence of a summer dessert menu. To achieve it, he and Gillian united small batches of Glenmorangie single malt aged in ex bourbon casks with the distillery's first ever use of high vanillin casks, specially toasted virgin oak casks engineered to amplify vanilla, cream, and confectionery sweetness. The result is a wondrously rich, creamy, dessert forward single malt with notes of peach melba, vanilla, lemon sorbet, coconut flakes, toffee, and brioche. Bottled at 46% ABV non chill filtered to preserve the full creamy texture. The presentation features a vibrant ice cream parlour themed gift box with swirling pastel illustrations of ice cream scoops, capturing the playful spirit of the release. Sits alongside earlier Tale Of releases (A Tale of Cake, A Tale of the Forest, A Tale of Tokyo, A Tale of Winter) in the award winning series.

FAQ

What is the "A Tale Of…" series? The "A Tale Of…" series is Glenmorangie's award winning limited edition collection showcasing the relentless creativity of Director of Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden and his team. Each release captures an unexpected flavor inspiration in whisky form, paired with distinctive artistic packaging. Previous releases include A Tale of Cake, A Tale of the Forest, A Tale of Tokyo, A Tale of Winter, and now A Tale of Ice Cream (the fifth release).

What are high vanillin casks? High vanillin casks are specially toasted virgin oak casks engineered to amplify vanillin (the natural compound responsible for the vanilla flavor in oak aged spirits) far beyond standard maturation casks. A Tale of Ice Cream is the first Glenmorangie expression ever to use them, and they are responsible for the bottle's pronounced creamy vanilla character, the defining feature inspired by ice cream.

Who is Dr Bill Lumsden? Dr Bill Lumsden is Glenmorangie's Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation, and Whisky Stocks. He holds a PhD in biochemistry and has been with Glenmorangie since 1995, joining a select group of master whisky creators who have shaped modern single malt scotch. He is widely considered one of the most innovative figures in the industry and is also responsible for sister distillery Ardbeg's creative direction.

How is this different from standard Glenmorangie? The flagship Glenmorangie Original 10 Year is matured in standard ex bourbon casks for 10 years. A Tale of Ice Cream is a no age statement limited edition that combines ex bourbon casks with the distillery's first ever high vanillin casks, producing a notably sweeter, creamier, more dessert focused profile than any standard Glenmorangie expression. It is non chill filtered at 46% ABV (compared to the 40% of the standard Original 10).

How should I drink it? Best enjoyed neat in a tulip glass to fully appreciate the rich creamy texture and layered sweet notes, or with a splash of water to open the vanilla crème anglaise and coconut. The brand also suggests serving over a single large ice cube to enhance the cool dessert sensation, or pairing with vanilla ice cream and creamy desserts to lean into the inspiration.
