Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2012 is a single malt with a clear mission: to show what Islay itself tastes like when the smoke is taken away. Every grain of barley in this bottle was grown on the island, sourced from eight named farms, Coull, Rockside, Island, Mulindry, Starchmill, Cruach, Dunlossit and Sunderland, and distilled at Bruichladdich on the shores of Loch Indaal in 2012. The spirit then spent eight years maturing in American and French oak on Islay before being bottled at 100 proof, non chill filtered and with no added color, exactly as the distillery intends. Unpeated and bright, it puts the barley and the island's salty Atlantic air at center stage. Expect orchard fruit, melon and citrus layered over creamy vanilla, honey and malted cereal, finished with gentle oak spice and a fresh coastal tang. The higher bottling strength brings real texture, so try it neat first, then add a few drops of water to open up more fruit and floral notes. For anyone who thinks Islay only means peat, this bottle is a revelation, and for Bruichladdich fans it is an essential chapter in the distillery's long exploration of barley provenance and terroir.
