Dos Artes takes its name, meaning two arts, from the two crafts it puts equal weight behind: the tequila and the ceramic vessel that holds it. The 2021 Skull is one of the more striking entries in the annual Calavera series, worked in cobalt blue and cream in a Talavera pottery idiom, with a Día de Muertos skeleton face carved in relief across the front panel and floral detail running over the shoulders, neck and stopper. Each decanter is shaped, fired and painted individually by Mexican artisans across a process that runs around seventy two hours, so no two are the same and yours will differ in small ways from any photograph. Inside is the Blanco, and it is the purest statement in the Dos Artes range. Where the Reposado, Añejo and Extra Añejo expressions build oak character over months or years, the Blanco goes into the bottle unaged and straight off the still, which leaves nothing between the drinker and the agave itself. The spirit is made from 100 percent Blue Weber agave grown in the volcanic soil of Jalisco and produced at Casa Tres Mujeres under NOM 1466, cooked in autoclave, extracted by roller mill, fermented and then double distilled in copper alembic pot stills. It pours crystal clear with a silvery cast and reads bright and clean: fresh cut agave on the nose with citrus zest, white pepper and a faint mineral salinity, then a lively palate of agave sweetness, lime and herbal notes, closing on a crisp peppery snap. Bottled at 40 percent alcohol by volume in a full litre. Among collectors, Dos Artes sits alongside Clase Azul and KAH in the small group of brands whose bottles are collected as objects in their own right.

Color: Crystal clear and luminous with a silvery sheen.
Nose: Freshly cut and cooked agave, citrus zest and white pepper, with fresh herbs and a hint of mineral salinity.
Palate: Smooth and lively. Agave sweetness leads, with lime, herbal notes and a pleasant peppery kick building through.
Finish: Clean and crisp, warm, with a lingering peppery snap and pure agave.
Q: Is this aged?
A: No. It is a blanco, bottled straight after distillation with no oak maturation, so the flavour is pure agave.
Q: Why is it a full litre?
A: Dos Artes bottles its entire range in one litre ceramic decanters rather than the standard 750ml.
Q: Will my bottle look exactly like the photo?
A: No two are identical. Each decanter is carved, fired and hand painted individually over roughly seventy two hours, so small variations are expected.
Q: Who produces the tequila?
A: It is produced at Casa Tres Mujeres in Jalisco under NOM 1466, from 100 percent Blue Weber agave.
Q: How does the Blanco compare to the aged Dos Artes expressions?
A: The Reposado, Añejo and Extra Añejo build oak, vanilla and caramel character. The Blanco is the brand's purest agave statement and the brightest bottle in the range.
Q: Where can I buy Dos Artes Skull 2021 Blanco online?
A: Available here at Liquor On Broadway while stock lasts, with fast insured shipping nationwide.
