The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve is a tribute to George Smith — the man who in 1824 became the first licensed distiller in the Livet valley and defined what Speyside Scotch could be. First released in 2014 to honor that legacy, Founder's Reserve replicates Smith's original approach: no rigid age statement, selecting whisky from casks of varied ages just as he did, and letting the cask influence speak for itself. The result is a modern Speyside single malt that stays true to the founding vision while using first-fill American oak ex-bourbon casks to add a layer of creamy sweetness and vanilla that makes it one of the most approachable and versatile Scotches in The Glenlivet portfolio.
Bottled at 40% ABV from The Glenlivet's iconic lantern-shaped copper pot stills — designed by George Smith himself — Founder's Reserve is a brilliant everyday single malt Scotch. Exceptional value, exceptional smoothness, and a genuine connection to over 200 years of Speyside distilling history.

How does Founder's Reserve differ from The Glenlivet 12 Year?
The 12 Year is aged in a mix of American and European oak and carries the specific 12-year age statement. Founder's Reserve is an NAS expression using a higher proportion of first-fill American oak ex-bourbon casks, which gives it more pronounced vanilla and creamy sweetness. It's slightly lighter and more fruit-forward — introduced to complement the 12 Year and to serve markets where the 12 Year is unavailable.
What does "first-fill American oak" mean?
First-fill means the cask has never previously been used to mature Scotch whisky. These casks previously held American bourbon (which by US law must be aged in new oak), so they impart a strong vanilla, caramel, and sweet oak character to the spirit — exactly what gives Founder's Reserve its distinctively creamy sweetness.
Is this a good beginner Scotch?
Yes — Founder's Reserve is widely recommended as a top starter Scotch. It's not peated, not heavily oaked, and its fruit-forward sweetness makes it genuinely approachable for whiskey drinkers of all levels.
