Templeton Rye Aged 6 Years is the flagship of the Templeton range, a high rye whiskey that pays homage to the Prohibition era spirit once made in and around the small farming town of Templeton, Iowa, a whiskey so prized by those in the know that it earned the nickname The Good Stuff. The brand traces its recipe to that bootlegging heritage, and back in 2010 the distillery set aside a few select barrels of well aged stock for this longer maturation. Built on a classic 95 percent rye and 5 percent malted barley mash bill, the whiskey is distilled in Indiana, then aged a full six years in charred new American oak barrels. It is finished in Templeton, Iowa, where local water and the brand's proprietary flavoring formula are blended in before bottling, a step meant to echo the flavor profile of those historic predecessors and one that gives the whiskey its signature softness. Bottled at 91.5 proof, it pours a deep tawny bronze. The nose leads with butterscotch, orange blossom, vanilla and cherry over gentle pumpernickel rye spice, with an almost bakery like pastry quality. The palate is fuller and sweeter than many high rye whiskeys, layering brown sugar, apple, peach, cinnamon and coconut with classic rye spice, while six years of oak lend structure without heavy tannin. The finish is long, warming and smooth with nuttiness, spice and a touch of herbal pine. A multiple gold medal winner, it makes an approachable neat pour and an outstanding base for an elevated Manhattan, Old Fashioned or whiskey sour. Bold where it should be and smooth where it counts, this is Templeton at its most complete.
