Barrell Vantage applies the three-part finishing methodology Barrell Craft Spirits pioneered on Seagrass and Dovetail — but this time the experiment is not about different spirit categories or flavor profiles. It is about the oak itself. Vantage is a blend of straight bourbons sourced from Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee, with each component finished separately in a different type of virgin oak: Mizunara (Japanese oak), French oak, and toasted American oak — all at varying char and toast levels. The three finished bourbons are then blended, rather than blended first and then finished, which gives Barrell maximum precision over how each oak type contributes to the final blend. The result is a multidimensional portrait of what oak can do to bourbon: creamy and resinous from the American toasted casks, richly spiced from the French oak, and perfumed with exotic incense from the Mizunara. Gold Medal at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Bottled at natural cask strength — this batch is 114.44 proof (57.22% ABV).

Color: Burnt sienna — deep and rich
Nose: Crème brûlée, coconut oil, and chocolate pudding from the toasted American oak. Tarragon, nutmeg, and warm cola from the French oak. Incense and grilled pineapple from the Mizunara — each pulling in a different direction simultaneously. Creamy, spicy, and resinous overall.
Palate: Richly textured and oily — sweet espresso, cola, brown sugar, and maple syrup lead with rye pumpernickel spice and barrel char building through the mid palate. The three oaks layer rather than blend, creating a kaleidoscopic complexity that evolves sip to sip.
Finish: Long and spicy — green grapes and red plums burst above the barrel notes, with za'atar, crystallized ginger, and Szechuan peppercorns. Viscous and warming.
What is Mizunara oak and why is it significant?
Mizunara is Japanese oak — one of the rarest and most expensive barrel woods in the world, notoriously difficult to work with due to its grain structure. In whisky, it is known for adding exotic, incense-like aromatic compounds that are genuinely unlike any other oak variety. Its use in American bourbon is extremely uncommon, making Vantage one of very few bourbons to feature it as a deliberate finishing component.
