Three bourbons from Heaven Hill in Bardstown, Kentucky, family owned since 1935 and one of the largest independent whiskey producers in America. What makes this set work is that the three bottles are built three different ways. Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond 7 Year carries the distillery's own name and is the anchor here. Bottled in bond means it is the product of one distillery and one distilling season, aged at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse and bottled at exactly 100 proof, and this one goes well past the minimum with a stated seven years. It is rich and structured, with caramel, vanilla and baking spice over toasted oak, a firm palate of brown sugar, dried fruit and cinnamon, and a long, warming finish. Elijah Craig Small Batch is named for the Baptist minister long credited with charring the oak barrel, and it takes the batching route, marrying a relatively small number of barrels for consistency. At 94 proof it is warm and rounded, with vanilla, caramel and toasted oak leading into sweet spice, dark fruit and a gently smoky close. Larceny is the wheated bottle, using soft red winter wheat in place of rye as the secondary grain, which makes it noticeably softer and sweeter than the other two. Named for John E. Fitzgerald and bottled at 92 proof, it brings butterscotch, honey and baked bread over light oak with a smooth caramel finish. Together the three span 92 to 100 proof and cover small batch, bottled in bond and wheated styles from a single house, which makes for a genuinely instructive tasting and a generous gift that does not require a bourbon expert to appreciate.
