Four bourbons, two distilleries and a genuine cross-section of what Kentucky does best. Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon is the flagship from the distillery in Frankfort, bottled at 90 proof from a low rye mash bill. It gives brown sugar, vanilla and mint on the nose, then toffee, dark fruit and anise with a long, smooth finish, and remains one of the best values in American whiskey. Eagle Rare 10 Year comes from the same distillery and the same mash bill, but with a full decade in oak at 90 proof, opening with toffee, candied almonds and orange peel before turning bold and dry with oak, leather and cocoa. Elijah Craig Small Batch comes from Heaven Hill in Bardstown, named for the Baptist minister long credited with charring the oak barrel. Bottled at 94 proof and batched from a relatively small number of barrels, it is warm and rounded, with vanilla, caramel and toasted oak leading into sweet spice, dark fruit and a long, gently smoky finish. Larceny, also from Heaven Hill, is the wheated one, using soft red winter wheat in place of rye as the secondary grain. Named for John E. Fitzgerald, it is bottled at 92 proof and drinks softer and sweeter than the others, with butterscotch, honey and baked bread over light oak and a touch of caramel. Together the four cover everything a bourbon drinker wants to compare: the everyday flagship, a ten year old, a small batch, and a wheated bourbon, spanning 90 to 94 proof. It makes an excellent tasting flight, a generous gift, and a fast way to stock a home bar with four genuinely well regarded bottles in one order.
