Booker's Bourbon Batch 2023-03, known as "Mighty Fine Batch," is the third release of the 2023 Booker's Small Batch Bourbon Collection, and perhaps the most personally resonant batch name in the series since the early named releases began in 2015. The name honors Booker Noe's signature phrase — "mighty fine" — the two words he reached for whenever he approved of something, whether that was his namesake bourbon, his beloved country ham, or the work of someone he admired. Booker was not given to extravagant compliments, which is exactly what made "mighty fine" land so hard when he said it. The name also carries a specific and deeply personal memory for Fred Noe. Shortly before Booker passed away in 2004, Fred selected the barrels for a Booker's batch for the very first time — a moment full of pressure for a son stepping into enormous shoes. After tasting the sample Fred brought him, Booker looked at his son and said simply: "Mighty fine job, son." Fred has never forgotten that moment, and this batch carries it forward. Aged 7 years, 1 month, and 10 days, drawn from seven production dates across six warehouses — with 55% of the blend anchored by the 5th floor of 7-story warehouse 3 — and bottled at 63.3% ABV and 126.6 proof, uncut and unfiltered. Presented in the classic Booker's dark wood box with glass panel. Now a back vintage from the 2023 collection.

Tasting Notes

Color: Dark mahogany amber with copper highlights and long clinging legs — richly oily from over seven years and 55% warehouse 3 floor concentration.

Nose: Toasted oak and honey open alongside vanilla, caramelized nuts, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a touch of tobacco. Classic Booker's peanut character is present with dry roasted corn and allspice in support. Inviting and well-structured for the proof.

Palate: Big and bold with an unexpected approachability at 126.6 proof — the medium-thick, oily body softens the entry. Molasses, vanilla ice cream, peanut butter, dark chocolate, and cinnamon candies build alongside oak and honey. The oak influence is notably well-dialed, particularly impressive for a batch ticking past seven years.

Finish: Long and warm with a fading sweetness — vanilla, creamy nuts, a kiss of wood sugar, and lingering pepper spice. One of the cleaner, more satisfying finishes in recent Booker's batches.

FAQ

What is the story behind the Mighty Fine Batch name?
"Mighty fine" was Booker Noe's go-to phrase for anything he approved of — bourbon, country ham, a well-done job. Everyone who knew Booker knew that when he sipped something and called it mighty fine, that was his highest compliment. Fred Noe named this batch after both the phrase and a specific memory: the first time Fred ever selected barrels for a Booker's batch without his father, shortly before Booker passed away in 2004. After tasting what Fred had chosen, Booker looked at his son and said simply, "Mighty fine job, son." It remains one of the most significant moments in Fred's career.
