The Balvenie French Oak 16 Year Old is the celebrated Speyside distillery's first ever foray into French oak finishing and a permanent addition to the core range, the first since the 14 Year Caribbean Cask launched in 2013. Created by legendary Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE, the whisky was inspired by a trip to the French Charentes region, when Balvenie's USA brand ambassador Lorne Cousin suggested exploring Pineau des Charentes casks after fondly remembering sipping the regional aperitif during a family trip. Pineau des Charentes is a French fortified wine made from unfermented grape juice combined with Cognac eaux de vie, then matured in oak, a unique base for cask finishing that brings vibrant, lifted, Cognac adjacent character to the whisky. The Balvenie 16 is initially matured 16 years in traditional American oak ex bourbon casks, then transferred to French oak Pineau casks for a secondary maturation of several months. Bottled non chill filtered at a robust 47.6% ABV to preserve every nuance. The result is a remarkably vibrant single malt, light gold in color, with bright honeyed orchard fruit, citrus, floral, ginger, and the elegant Pineau influence woven throughout. A serious sipping single malt and an essential addition for fans of The Balvenie's celebrated cask finishing tradition.

Tasting Notes
Color: Light gold with a touch of straw (natural color).
Nose: Beautifully balanced light floral notes of lotus and geranium dance between fresh meadow grass and peeled apple skin, layered with intense honey, orange marmalade, vanilla, a hint of nutmeg, and green grape skins from the Pineau influence.
Palate: An energizing zing of tangy lemon rind and grapefruit meets the delicate subtle sweetness of glazed fruits, root ginger spice, shortbread, and icewine. Vanilla oak and a touch of mint develop with time; water unlocks deeper burnt sugar sweetness, chocolate orange, and cooked oats.
Finish: Refreshingly concise yet layered with marzipan, vanilla icing, crystallized ginger, grapefruit, honey, and green melon. Bright, lifted, and elegant.
FAQ
What is Pineau des Charentes? Pineau des Charentes is a French fortified wine produced in the Cognac region (Charentes), made from unfermented grape juice combined with Cognac eaux de vie and then matured in oak. Often enjoyed as an aperitif in France, it has a distinctive bright fruit and Cognac adjacent character. The Balvenie 16 French Oak is finished in casks that previously held Pineau des Charentes, an unusual and innovative cask choice within the world of single malt whisky.
How is this different from other Balvenie expressions? The Balvenie 16 French Oak is the distillery's first ever French oak finished single malt and the first new permanent core range addition since the 14 Year Caribbean Cask launched in 2013. The Pineau cask finish produces a notably vibrant, fruit forward, and Cognac influenced profile that sits apart from the brand's other expressions like the 12 DoubleWood (sherry finish), 14 Caribbean Cask (rum finish), and 21 PortWood (port finish).
Who is David C. Stewart MBE? David C. Stewart is The Balvenie's legendary Malt Master, who joined William Grant & Sons in 1962 and has been The Balvenie's Malt Master since 1974, one of the longest serving Malt Masters in the Scotch whisky industry. He pioneered the practice of cask finishing in Scotch whisky, and the entire DoubleWood and finishing tradition at Balvenie is built on his innovation. The French Oak 16 is one of his more recent landmark expressions.
Why is The Balvenie special? The Balvenie is one of the few Scotch distilleries that still maintains traditional floor maltings (growing some of its own barley), its own coppersmith, and an on site team of coopers, the five rare crafts that William Grant & Sons believes are essential to the distillery's character. This commitment to traditional craftsmanship is the foundation of every Balvenie expression.
How should I drink it? Best enjoyed neat in a tulip glass to fully appreciate the vibrant fruit and floral character, with a few drops of water to unlock additional depth (cooked oats, chocolate orange, burnt sugar). At 47.6% ABV non chill filtered, it has the body to take water beautifully. Pairs especially well with roasted duck, Comté cheese, or as a contemplative neat pour.
How does this compare to other Balvenie aged expressions? The 16 French Oak sits alongside the 12 DoubleWood, 14 Caribbean Cask, 16 Triple Cask, 17 DoubleWood, 21 PortWood, and the prestigious aged tier above. As a 16 Year non chill filtered bottling at 47.6% ABV with a unique Pineau finish, it offers a distinctive flavor profile that no other Balvenie replicates.
