Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series 2022 Limited Release BRT-01 is a sought after, limited edition bourbon from the iconic Loretto, Kentucky distillery, and the fourth installment in the celebrated Wood Finishing Series. The Wood Finishing Series takes fully matured, cask strength Maker's Mark and finishes it in secondary barrels fitted with proprietary toasted wood staves, then rests those barrels in the distillery's limestone cellar. For 2022, the theme was barrel rotation, and the BRT in the name stands for the brand's signature practice of hand rotating its barrels, all 200,000 of them each year, through the rickhouse so every barrel gets equal exposure to the warehouse's varying temperatures. Released as a pair meant to let you taste your way through the rickhouse, BRT-01 captures the character of the hotter top of the rickhouse, where maturation is most intense, while its companion BRT-02 reflects the cooler bottom. BRT-01 is finished with ten virgin toasted American oak staves chosen to amplify the rich flavors developed during the bourbon's formative early years of maturation. Built on the classic Maker's wheated mashbill of 70 percent corn, 16 percent red winter wheat, and 14 percent malted barley, and bottled non chill filtered at a robust cask strength of 109.4 proof, it delivers a nose of caramel and butterscotch with sweet spice, a palate of bright caramel, vanilla cupcake, buttered toast, brown sugar, and honeyed warm spice, and a finish where toasted oak shines alongside drying vanilla and wood. As a limited annual release that is no longer in production, it is a rewarding bottle for the Maker's Mark devotee, the wood finishing enthusiast, and the collector alike. Enjoy it neat or with a splash of water.
