Lagavulin 8 Year is the youngest age stated expression in the permanent Lagavulin core range, born out of the success of the 2016 200th Anniversary limited edition that introduced the world to younger, brighter Lagavulin and proved so popular that Diageo made it a standard release. From the legendary Lagavulin Distillery on the southern coast of Islay, founded in 1816 by John Johnston and now one of the most revered names in single malt scotch, this expression is matured in refill American oak casks and bottled at 48% ABV with no chill filtration, an uncommon house standard for a sub 10 year scotch. The bottle label proudly carries Victorian whisky journalist Alfred Barnard's famous 1880s tasting note describing the 8 year old he sampled at Lagavulin as "exceptionally fine," anchoring the entire release in the distillery's own history. Where the flagship Lagavulin 16 Year delivers heavy, rich, sherry tinged smoke after over a decade and a half in cask, the 8 Year emphasizes bright, vibrant, coastal peat character with citrus, brine, and maritime smoke leading the way. At a meaningfully lower price than the 16, the 8 Year has become the go to everyday Lagavulin for serious Islay drinkers and a reliable workhorse on bar carts worldwide.

FAQ
How is the 8 Year different from the standard Lagavulin 16? The flagship Lagavulin 16 Year is bottled at 43% ABV and is chill filtered, with deeper sherry tinged complexity from extended aging. The 8 Year is bottled at 48% ABV with no chill filtration, emphasizing brighter, fresher, more coastal peat character. Many Lagavulin fans now keep both bottles open, with the 8 as the everyday peat pour and the 16 reserved for richer, contemplative drinking.
How is this different from the 2016 200th Anniversary release? The original 200th Anniversary limited edition came in distinctive 1816 to 2016 commemorative packaging and is now a discrete collector's item. The current core range 8 Year shown here uses the same general spec (8 year old, refill American oak, 48% ABV) but with permanent core range packaging featuring Alfred Barnard's "exceptionally fine" quote. Compare with our Lagavulin 8 Year 200th Anniversary 1816-2016 Limited Edition.
Who was Alfred Barnard? Alfred Barnard was a Victorian writer often called the first whisky journalist. From 1885 to 1887 he visited every working distillery in the United Kingdom and published his findings in The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom (1887), still one of the most important reference works in whisky history. During his visit to Lagavulin in the 1880s he tasted an 8 year old that he described as "exceptionally fine," a phrase Lagavulin now prints on the front of every 8 Year bottle.
Why is this lighter in color than the 16? Refill American oak casks impart less color and oak flavor than first fill barrels, leaving the natural distillate character (peat, brine, citrus) at the forefront. The lighter color is intentional and reflects the higher quality cask selection rather than added caramel coloring. Combined with the 48% ABV and no chill filtration, the result is a meaningfully more expressive young Lagavulin than typical entry level scotch.
