Herradura Añejo is the original commercial añejo tequila, launched by Casa Herradura in 1962 and credited with creating the entire añejo category. Distilled and estate bottled at Hacienda San José del Refugio in Amatitán, Jalisco, the last tequila producing hacienda on the planet, this añejo is made from 100% Blue Weber Agave slow roasted in traditional brick ovens for 26 hours, naturally fermented with wild yeasts from the fruit trees surrounding the hacienda, and aged a full 25 months in American white oak barrels. That's more than double the 12 month minimum required by Mexican law for the añejo category. The result is deep amber, balanced, oak driven, and unmistakably Herradura. Signed by Maestra Tequilera María Teresa Lara López.

Why is Herradura considered the original añejo? Herradura introduced the world's first commercial añejo tequila in 1962, effectively creating the category. The brand also pioneered the first commercial reposado in 1974 and the first extra añejo in 1995. Casa Herradura has shaped almost every aged tequila category that exists today.
How long is Herradura Añejo aged? A full 25 months in American White Oak barrels, more than double the 12 month minimum required for añejo classification under Mexican law (NOM 006). Most añejos sit between 12 and 18 months. Herradura's longer aging delivers deeper oak, richer color, and more complexity.
What's special about Casa Herradura's production? Founded in 1870, Casa Herradura is the last tequila producing hacienda on the planet. They reject modern autoclaves in favor of traditional brick ovens, slow steaming the piñas for 26 hours, and ferment with wild yeasts from the surrounding fruit trees rather than commercial cultured yeasts.
