The release draws on the long relationship between France and the United States, symbolised by the Statue of Liberty, which France formally presented to America on July 4, 1884. The whiskey is a blend of Kentucky straight bourbon and straight rye whiskies, made in nine batches of seven barrels each. It is finished across three distinct cask types, the first Case Study to use more than two. Calvados casks, which held the apple brandy of Normandy, bring baked apple, pear and orchard fruit. Martinique rhum agricole casks, from rum made with fresh sugarcane juice, add a grassy, mineral, tropical freshness. Caribbean rum casks, from molasses-based rum, deepen the blend with dark sugar and tropical fruit. The rye adds spice and structure beneath it all. Non-chill filtered, it is bottled at 107.4 proof, a nod to that 1884 date, and presented in Frank August's minimalist decanter with a glass stopper. Expect a nose of baked apple, pear compote and stone fruit, with toasted coconut and a hint of rhum minerality. The palate is full and layered, with raw sugar, vanilla cream, molasses, spiced rum, baked pineapple, cinnamon and cracked pepper. The finish is long, with brown sugar, dried tropical fruit, soft oak and a returning note of orchard fruit.
