Compass Box The Peat Monster is a modern classic of the peated whisky world and one of the signature creations of Compass Box, the celebrated independent Scotch whiskymaker founded by John Glaser. Born in 2003 from a bespoke New York bottling that proved too good to keep to one shop, The Peat Monster has become a benchmark for how artful blending can tame and shape smoke. Despite its fierce name and Lovecraftian label art, this is not a brute force peat bomb but an unconventionally elegant marriage of peated Scottish single malts, layered to deliver complex, smoky character with genuine finesse. The blend is built largely around peated Islay malts, most prominently Caol Ila and Laphroaig, rounded out with a small proportion of Compass Box's own Highland malt married in custom French oak casks. As with everything from Compass Box, it is bottled at a generous 46 percent, without chill filtration and with completely natural colour, so what you see and taste is exactly as the whiskymaker intended. The recipe is refreshed over time as the team continues to refine it, making each iteration its own experience. Expect thick peat smoke, smoked bacon, sea salt, and coastal bonfire on the nose, giving way to an oily, generous palate of earthy smoke, sweet vanilla, tropical fruit, and spicy oak, all carried on a long, warming, smoky finish. For lovers of Islay and peat, or for anyone curious to explore smoky Scotch through the lens of a master blender, The Peat Monster is an essential and rewarding dram, superb late at night neat or in a smoky Scotch highball.
