The distillery took casks and charred them far beyond any normal specification, to a level it describes as fiercely charred, then filled them with heavily peated Ardbeg spirit and left the result in Dunnage Warehouse 3, the traditional earth floored warehouse that sits closest to the sea. Charring a cask is standard practice, but the degree matters enormously. A heavier char burns deeper into the wood, breaking down more of the timber's structure and creating a thicker layer of active carbon on the inside surface. That carbon strips out harsher sulphury compounds while the caramelised sugars beneath release far more vanilla, spice and dark toasted character than a light char ever would. Against Ardbeg's already substantial peat, the effect is intense rather than smooth. The distillery's own framing calls it a flavour breathing dragon, and the label sets out what to expect: toasted cloves and wisps of sweet peat smoke interfacing with thick clouds of sinew wood and sage. There is charcoal and ash here in abundance, but also a genuine sweetness underneath that the char has drawn out of the oak. Bottled at 46 percent alcohol by volume, non chill filtered and at natural colour, so nothing has been removed or corrected. This was a one time annual release for Fèis Ìle and has not been repeated. The illustrated dragon carton is part of the appeal and worth keeping. Launched on February 24, 2026, this is the first widely available cask strength 10 Year from Ardbeg since a tiny, almost mythical Japan only release in 2003, and it stands as the highest strength Ardbeg Committee Release ever bottled at a robust 61.7% ABV. Created by Master Blender Gillian MacDonald alongside Ardbeg's Director of Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden MBE, the whisky was drawn from a hand selected set of American oak ex bourbon casks, including experimental barrels filled with undiluted new make spirit at a higher than usual 71% ABV strength a decade ago. The result is an Ardbeg of incredible intensity, the signature peaty paradox of the Ten amplified, with dense smoke, brine, sea spray, tar, and creosote up front balanced by smooth natural sweetness, vanilla, toffee, and a long warming finish. Bottled at 61.7% ABV, non chill filtered, and drawn from the heart of the distillery's character. Established 1815, Ardbeg is widely revered as one of the smokiest, peatiest, and most complex of all Islay malts. As a limited Committee release, once it is gone, it is gone, and this is destined to be one of the most sought after Ardbegs of the modern era.

ABV / Proof

Brand

Ardbeg

Distillery

Ardbeg Distillery Limited, Isle of Islay, Argyll, Scotland (Est. 1815)

Producer

The Glenmorangie Company (LVMH)

Master Blender

Gillian MacDonald

Director of Whisky Creation

Dr Bill Lumsden MBE

Category

Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Cask Strength

Expression

Ten Cask Strength "The Ultimate" (Committee Release)

Age Statement

10 Years

Launched

February 24, 2026

Maturation

Hand selected American oak ex bourbon casks (including experimental barrels filled with new make at 71% ABV)

Bottling

Cask strength, non chill filtered

ABV

61.7%

Proof

123.4

Bottle Size

700ml

Status

Limited Ardbeg Committee Release; the highest-strength Committee Release to date

Country

Scotland

Region

Islay

Tasting Notes

Color: Pale gold with greenish highlights (natural color).

Nose: Rich tar, sea spray, smoke, spice, toffee, creosote, coffee grounds, and vanilla, with the dense maritime peat character Ardbeg is famous for amplified by the cask strength.

Palate: Smoked cinnamon, paprika, soot, peat moss, wood smoke, and a gentle biscuity malt sweetness, balanced by citrus, salt, and a smooth natural sweetness. After more than two decades of Committee demand, the distillery hand selected a set of American oak bourbon casks, some experimentally filled with new make spirit at the unusually high strength of 71% ABV a decade ago, to create this 61.7% bottling, the highest strength Ardbeg Committee Release ever made.

How is this different from the standard Ardbeg 10? Same distillery, same ex bourbon American oak maturation, same 10 year age, but the standard Ardbeg 10 is bottled at 46% ABV (92 proof) and the Cask Strength is bottled at 61.7% (123.4 proof). The result is significantly more intense peat smoke, deeper concentration of every flavor, and a longer warming finish, all amplified by the higher proof. Many enthusiasts consider the cask strength the definitive expression of Ardbeg's smoky style.

How should I drink it? At 61.7% ABV, sip neat first to experience the full intensity, then add a few drops of water to open the aromatics and tame the heat. Component whiskies matured separately in three different cask types are brought together in that vat and left to marry before bottling, which is a step most distilleries skip entirely. Pedro Ximénez sherry casks contribute dark sweetness, raisin and treacle. Virgin charred oak brings spice, vanilla and a tannic grip. Classic ex bourbon casks supply the familiar Ardbeg backbone. Marrying them in wood rather than simply blending them in a tank allows the components to integrate rather than sit alongside one another, and that is precisely what gives An Oa its defining quality: roundness. The label puts it in three words, smoky, sweet, singularly rounded, and that is an honest summary. The peat is unmistakably Ardbeg but the edges have been softened, which makes this the bottle to reach for if the distillery's more ferocious expressions have felt like hard work. The name comes from the Mull of Oa, the rounded headland at Islay's southernmost point that shelters the distillery from the Atlantic, and it is pronounced an oh. Bottled at 46.6 percent alcohol by volume, non chill filtered, so nothing has been stripped out. Drawn from rare ex-bourbon casks filled during some of the distillery's darkest production years in the late 1980s and early 1990s, this is a singular expression that proves age cannot tame Ardbeg's signature smoke. The whisky is non chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV in a striking gun metal silver bottle, presented in a sculpted silver caged tin that mirrors the rare and untamed nature of the liquid within. Twenty five years of slow Islay maturation has rounded the distillery's pungent peat into something more refined, layered with creamy sweetness, tropical fruit, and balanced complexity that only deep aging can deliver. Production remains limited by the small number of barrels laid down during that era, making each release scarce and increasingly difficult to source as cohorts deplete.

ABV / Proof

Brand

Ardbeg

Distillery

Ardbeg Distillery, Islay, Scotland

Region

Islay

Type

Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Mash Bill

100% Malted Barley, peated to approximately 50 ppm

Age

25 Years

Cask

Ex-Bourbon

ABV

46%

Proof

92

Filtration

Non chill filtered

Bottle Size

750ml

Country

Scotland

Packaging

Gun metal silver bottle in sculpted silver caged presentation tin

Added to Core Range

2021

Tasting Notes

Color: Warm amber with antique gold highlights.

Nose: A pungent burst of smoked cream, peppermint, and toffee with Ardbeg's classic fennel and pine resin. Rather than a single fixed recipe repeated year after year, it is issued in annual small batches, each drawn from a different selection of casks and each carrying its own batch code, its own bottling strength and its own character. This bottle is Batch 02, bottled in 2020, and the code is printed in full on the front label. Nineteen years is a long time for a heavily peated Islay malt. Peat does not simply persist across two decades, it transforms, and what starts as aggressive smoke matures into something closer to incense, roasted tea and dry ash. The maturation here runs across American oak and Oloroso sherry casks, the former supplying vanilla and coconut sweetness, the latter dried fruit and a nutty depth, and both working to round out a spirit that has already lost most of its youthful ferocity to time. The distillery's own note is precise and worth quoting as guidance: fresh lime, roasted tea leaves, smoked pineapple. That tropical fruit character is the signature of well aged Islay whisky and it is very much present. Where essentially every Ardbeg arrives in green glass, this one is opaque black, which makes it immediately identifiable on a shelf and is a large part of why collectors sought it out. The whisky inside is unusual too. Ardbeg matured it in Pinot Noir wine casks from New Zealand, which is a genuinely uncommon choice for a heavily peated Islay malt. Pinot Noir is a lighter bodied red than the Cabernet or Syrah wood that occasionally appears in whisky finishing, and it contributes red fruit, a soft floral perfume and a fine grained tannin rather than heavy dark fruit weight. Set against Ardbeg's peat, the effect is a whisky that runs sweeter and fruitier than expected while keeping the smoke firmly in place. The New Zealand connection is also where the name comes from, a nod to that country's sheep, and the packaging leans into the joke without apology. Bottled at 46 percent alcohol by volume, non chill filtered and at natural colour, so nothing has been stripped out or corrected. This was a one time anniversary release for the Committee's twentieth year and it has not been repeated. Note that a separate Committee Release of Blaaack exists at higher strength, so check the figure on the label. The whisky is made using roasted black malt, barley kilned at extreme temperatures until it is very nearly burnt. Black malt is a familiar ingredient to brewers, where it gives stout its colour and its bitter roasted edge, but it is almost unheard of in Scotch, and Ardbeg had never used it before. The effect is not simply more smoke. Ardbeg is already among the most heavily peated malts made, so adding roast character pushes the whisky somewhere different rather than somewhere louder, toward coffee grounds, burnt toast, chicory and dark chocolate. The nose is spicy and savoury, with marmite, charcoal and infused coffee grounds alongside a classic Ardbeg herbal top note, with bonfire smoke and molasses sitting behind. The palate is fiery and full, delivering cocoa powder, dark chocolate, peanut brittle toffee, smoked lime and a suggestion of soot, with aniseed and malty biscuit pushing forward. The finish turns sweeter and runs long, on treacle toffee, soot and smoke. It is bottled at 46 percent alcohol by volume, non chill filtered and at natural colour, so nothing has been stripped out or corrected. This was a one time annual release tied to the Islay festival and it has not been repeated. This bottling brought together Ardbeg Master Distiller Dr. Bill Lumsden and renowned barbecue pitmaster Christian Stevenson (better known by his stage name DJ BBQ) to create a barbecue inspired single malt specifically engineered to pair with all things grilled, smoked, charred, and flame kissed. The whisky was matured in a unique three way cask combination: double charred oak casks, toasted Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, and experimental "BBQ casks" (heavily charred custom barrels made using an old fashioned brazier to deliver an additional layer of smoky char straight from the wood). Bottled at 50.9% ABV in February 2023, non chill filtered with natural color, this is a slightly higher proof Ardbeg than the standard core range, delivering a feast of meaty, smoky, sweet, savory, and spicy notes that range from maple glazed bacon and hickory smoked ham to flame grilled steak, BBQ ribs smothered in chili, cinnamon dusted espresso, and the unmistakable Ardbeg coastal peat smoke. Bottle features the playful BizarreBQ cartoon piggy artwork and the distinctive Ardbeg green glass bottle. The result is an additional dimension of charcoal, smoky char, and barbecue pit character that's distinct from what either double charred oak or Pedro Ximénez sherry casks contribute on their own. The packaging is a red and cream optical spiral wrapped around bottle and carton alike, with a sideshow roundel welcoming you to the spectacular of flavours, and it is among the most immediately recognisable things Ardbeg has ever put on a shelf. The label's own descriptor is the more informative part: a phenolic phenomenon. Phenols are the chemical compounds that carry peat smoke through malting and into the spirit, measured in parts per million and the standard yardstick for how heavily peated a whisky is. Naming them on the front of the bottle signals what this release is about. Where several recent Ardbeg limited editions have chased unusual cask types, from Marsala to Pinot Noir to fiercely charred oak, Spectacular points at the peat itself. That makes it a more direct proposition than the wood driven experiments, and a good bottle for anyone who came to Ardbeg for the smoke rather than the novelty. Expect the house character amplified rather than reshaped: dense peat smoke, tar and ash up front, with the distillery's characteristic sweetness and citrus lift underneath and a long, resinous, medicinal finish. Bottled at 46 percent alcohol by volume, non chill filtered and at natural colour, so nothing has been stripped out or corrected. It sits apart from the distillery's better known annual Ardbeg Day and Committee releases, which almost never carry an age statement, and that alone makes it worth attention: this is fourteen year old Ardbeg, described on the label as very rare. The maturation is a marriage of two cask types working in different directions. Classic Ardbeg ex bourbon casks provide the familiar backbone of vanilla, soft barley and the distillery's signature peat, while aromatic Madeira casks contribute something rather less expected. Madeira is a fortified wine matured under deliberate heat, and casks that have held it bring dried fruit, a faint nuttiness and a distinctive perfumed lift rather than the heavy dried fruit weight of sherry. Against fourteen years of Islay peat, that lift is what gives the whisky its character. The distillery's own account is precise: powerful smoke and zesty notes of lime canter across the palate, with soft barley and burning cedarwood lurking in the distance, while menthol, clove and camphor come together in a whimsically smoky finish. That camphor and menthol combination is unusual and genuinely present. Bottled at 46 percent alcohol by volume, non chill filtered, so nothing has been stripped out. Smokiverse is the 2025 edition, and it also marks twenty five years of the Ardbeg Committee, which is why that roundel appears on the label. The experiment here is high gravity mashing, and it is a genuine first for the distillery. In simple terms, less water and more grain go into the mash tun, producing a far more concentrated wort. That density drives the creation of flavor active esters during fermentation, and esters are what carry fruit character in whisky. The counterintuitive result is that a technique aimed at intensity produces a fruitier, sweeter Ardbeg rather than a smokier one. Maturation is in ex bourbon barrels, and the whisky is bottled at 48.3 percent alcohol by volume, non chill filtered and at natural color, so nothing has been stripped out or added back. In the glass it is bright gold. The nose is genuinely unusual, opening on smoked bubblegum and ripening barley with toasted sourdough behind, then moving into tropical fruit under a veil of smoke. Water opens it further into dense aromatic peat. The palate is rich and creamy, with muscovado sweetness carrying intense peat, tar, aniseed and clove, and sweet oak and leather underneath. It finishes long, sooty and spiced. Drink it neat first, then add a few drops of water and taste it again, because it changes considerably. The carton is a collage of film reels, cameras and Mediterranean citrus, and the whisky inside follows the same idea: la dolce vita, Islay style. The cask choice is what makes it interesting. Ardbeg matured this in sweet Marsala dolce casks from Sicily alongside its classic bourbon barrel aged single malt. Marsala is a fortified wine made around Trapani on Sicily's western coast, and it runs from bone dry secco through to the rich dolce style used here, which carries dried fruit, caramel, fig and chocolate. Marsala casks are genuinely uncommon in Scotch, far rarer than sherry, port or Madeira wood, and setting that Mediterranean sweetness against Ardbeg's medicinal coastal peat produces a real contrast rather than a gentle rounding off. The colour is a deep sunset orange. The nose leads with apricot, plump raisins, dates, stewed apple and orange marmalade, turning earthier and more saline with water, toward toasted mushroom, pine needle, capers and olives. The palate opens on cinnamon, star anise and spiced liquorice before moving into smoked wood, maple syrup, baked dates with walnuts, honeycomb and dark chocolate, then dried fruit and lemon rind against salted nuts and dried herbs. Non chill filtered at 47.8 percent, natural colour. This is a one time annual release and will not be repeated.
